Getting to Know Me: Laticia Hicks

I am happiest when I’m with my family (my husband, sons and dog) and friends, participating in physical fitness activities, and being engaged in my community.

As an avid reader, I find myself involved in multiple book clubs. My love for reading has rubbed off on my boys; they participate in the Book Buddies book club at the Crofton public library. Although their interest may revolve around the snacks and games they play after their monthly book discussion.

My weekends are spent at home reading or with my boys at their sports practices, games, and events. As a constant learner, I love to travel and explore new opportunities close to home.

In the Community

Being a member of the PTO has allowed me to get to know teachers, school administrators, parents and the extended families of students through both organized and unorganized events. I have developed many life-long relationships through my service.

My concerns for the environment lead me to volunteer with a non-profit, non-partisan, grassroots advocacy organization called Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL). CCL is focused on national policies to address climate change. As a congressional district liaison, I work to build relationships with elected officials and the local community towards the adoption of fair, effective, and sustainable climate change solutions.

Along with social and civic engagement, moderate to regular physical activity is an essential part of my lifestyle. Being a social person, I love attending group exercise classes such as Zumba or Body Pump. While the specifics on why participants attend may vary, each individual is there to shape themselves into a better person, both physically and mentally. No doubt I could do that on my own, but I enjoy the camaraderie I experience with a group achieving a shared goal.

How Crofton Became Home

I grew up in Brooklyn, New York. After high school, I attended the University of Miami (UM) on a Track and Field Scholarship. After obtaining my undergraduate degree at UM, I attended Florida International University (FIU), also in Miami, where I obtained a Master’s Degree.

I subsequently began what has become a long and successful career with the Department of Justice (DOJ). Working with the DOJ has taken me from Miami to Las Vegas, and then returning to New York to be near family.

In New York I met my husband, Scott. He is also a Law Enforcement Officer with the DOJ. We both actively sought assignment and responsibilities at the DOJ that has brought us to Washington, DC. We bought our home in Crofton nearly three years ago. We absolutely love it here. We love the neighborhood, the schools, and the people. We value the stability for our children. We can honestly say and openly agree that we are home.
